Our daughter told us she was going to spend the night at a friend's house. She said she would text me to come pick her up. She took her computer to play video games. We had no reason not to believe her. We trusted our daughter. Our daughter gave no indication she was planning to move out or move half way across the state to live with her former high school teacher.
When Elizabeth didn't return we tried texting, and she didn't respond, we tried calling Elizabeth no response. We put her photo on Facebook telling anyone if they see her to immediately call 911 because she was missing. We called police reported her missing. We were living our worst fears our daughter was missing. I felt I was going to die right then at that moment.
We later found a note in Elizabeth's room saying she moved out to stay with friends, and not to contact her. The note sounded nothing like our daughter and read like Elizabeth was coached as to what to say. We have a difficult time believing those were her words. We thought Elizabeth had fell victim to human trafficking. We were afraid that if we did not find her soon Elizabeth could be sold into slavery, prostitution, drugged, raped or even worse murdered.
We checked our cell phone records and found a phone number of someone Elizabeth had been communicating with. My son called the number and a woman on the other line was very cold and abrupt, and refused to provide any information except she had a copy of this note our daughter had left, and that our daughter was an adult. She said we would never find out where our daughter was located or find out who she was. This sounded more like something a kidnapper would say. I wondered if our daughter was with a criminal. After this, the person on phone refused to answer or respond to our texts and we were blocked.
With this phone number law enforcement was able to find our daughter. Law enforcement stated that Elizabeth claimed we were a threat to her or something to that effect. We were crushed when we heard that. This didn't sound like our daughter. We wondered who was influencing our daughter to say these things? But we knew at that moment our daughter was alive. This did not stop us from wanting to know where our daughter was or who she was with. Who was this woman and what was she doing with our daughter? What was her plans for our daughter?
A few weeks later we found out that our daughter's mail was going to an address in Roseburgh, Georgia. We found out the owner's of the property was none other than Dara Colt and Dean Colt. Our daughter's former high school teacher and her husband? We were shocked! How could this be?
We called law enforcement, they claimed nothing unusual. They claimed Dara Colt and her husband Dean Colt were fine outstanding citizens, they were not criminals, they had no criminal record. Nothing they could do. No matter how bizarre things appear, as creepy as things sound, it can not be proven that any law has been broken. I could not prove that my daughter was being harmed in any way. Everything was considered perfectly legal. No one cared about our daughter's mental illness.
Our daughter had just got a puppy in November. Elizabeth only had this puppy for 3 months, she had a cat and 2 birds. Elizabeth loved her cat like a mother loves a child. She let her puppy sleep with her at night. Why would our daughter abandon her pets? This didn't seem like something my daughter would do. This was her home, why did Elizabeth leave in this way?
Our daughter was well aware how estrangement hurts families. She promised me that she would never do anything like that to hurt her father or me. I believed her I trusted her. I made it clear to her that if she ever did anything like this it would destroy me, that I would be broken beyond repair. I often wonder does our daughter remember her promise? This make no sense that Elizabeth would go move in with her former teacher four hours away in secret.
Why would a teacher choose to hide a former student in her home? If I didn't say anything or do anything would anyone ever have noticed where Elizabeth was? Why would a teacher not have the decency to notify concerned parents that their child was alive and safe? No one seems concerned that we were worried out of our minds and Dara Colt had our daughter at her home and did not bother to contact us or ease our minds? Is this the expectations of those trusted to educate children? Why all the secrets and lies?
Was this planned? Our daughter was barely 18, Elizabeth turned 18 less than 2 months prior. She says in the note "I'm sorry for not being more open about my plans." How long was this planned? Would a respectable high school teacher plan to move a former student into her home once they turn 18? Why has law enforcement, Ga Department of Education investigated my daughter's relationship with this teacher? Did Dara colt make a plan to adopt a daughter? Did Dean Colt plan to adopt my daughter? Is adopting a legal adult daughter cheaper and easier than adopting a child? Below is the actual note left from our daughter.
